(2nd week)

The First APSCO Student Small Satellite (SSS) Project Summer Camp has been on-going for more than two weeks now, and so far, it has been a great success in both enhancing the knowledge and strengthening international cooperation in space education among the Member States of APSCO. The first week began with the grand Opening Ceremony and ended with the fruitful tour of the Aerospace Museum, and second week witnessed the development of a productive academic atmosphere and healthy friendships among the participating delegates from Member States (MS). It shows that holding the SSS Summer Camp was the right approach to the space education and capacity-building. Cultural Visit

As a mission to strengthen friendships and understanding among the participants, on August 26th, 2017, APSCO held a cultural visit to the Great Wall of China. This cultural visit would help relax students from their heavy workloads and develop more cultural exchange among the MS, thus strengthening the friendships and cooperation.
The Great Wall is one of the greatest wonders in the history of human race, and it is also one of the largest construction projects ever being conducted on the surface of the earth. The great wall was initially built during the Warrior States Period (5th Cent. - 3rd Cent. BCE) as a loose military defenses built by different warrior states to protect them from the invasions from the North. After the first unification of China under Qin Dynasty, the emperor, concerned with the constant threats in the north, ordered a single Great Wall to be constructed across the entire northern landscape of China, connecting all the previous loose walls built by the warrior states. Since then, many dynasties that followed the Qin had kept maintaining and improving the Great Wall to fend invaders out, and the Great Wall had served as the primary military defense for thousands of years, all the way until the Industrialization and Modernization Age.

The Great Wall stretches more than 10,000 km, covering the entire northern border of the core territory of Chinese farmlands and hovering among countless mountain ranges, crags, couloirs, and deserts in the harsh northern landscape of China. The Great Wall demonstrated the astonishing engineering ingenuity of the ancient China, the hardworking and diligent character of the Chinese race, and most importantly, the symbolic embodiment of the identity of the Chinese culture and people, and the noble wills of protecting this identity. Therefore, although its practical usage has long been over, it nonetheless serves as possibly the greatest national and cultural symbol in the Chinese society.
As a result, the Great Wall attracted millions of tourists from all over the world every year with its magnificence, rich history and profound culture. The participating delegates to the summer camp also expressed their great interests in visiting it. Through this tour, many of the delegates got to see the famous Great Wall for the first time, and all of them expressed their amazements and praises. The visit went very smoothly, and all the participants enjoyed a memorable experience with their friends on the Great Wall, and learned about the history and culture of China.

After visiting the Great Wall, a shopping tour to the Silk Market in Beijing was organized by APSCO. Many of the participants showed their great interests in the countless number of items being offered and came back with their fruitful shopping and great satisfaction.  As the nightfall approached, APSCO led all delegates back to the Vision Hotel to relax after a full-day of cultural visit and shopping.
APSCO is very pleased to receive the overwhelming positive feedback from our delegates, and is glad to see that our goals of strengthening friendships and understanding among the MS have been greatly successful.
The Summer Camp will continue with lectures, assignment work, team project, technical visits and presentations by participants during next week.
