APSCO, as the Permanent Observer Organization with UNCOPUOS, was invited to participate in the UNISPACE+50 celebrations and related events organized by the United Nation’s Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), in Vienna, Austria during 18-23 June 2018. At the UNISPACE+50 Symposium, Dr. Li Xinjun, the Secretary-General of APSCO, gave an impressive statement in the session for Panel of Space Agencies’ Heads, in support of the 50th Anniversary of the first United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. He expressed that APSCO would make unremitting efforts to enhance global partnership and cooperation to improve space-related capacity in the Asia-Pacific region and collectively contribute to "Space2030" Agenda. More than 20 Heads of Space Agencies participated this Panel Session, who shared progress on their national space programs and future plans of respective space agencies and exchanged their view on supporting the Sustainable Development Goals.
On the UNISPACE+50 High-Level segment, Secretary-General Dr. Li Xinjun, made a statement, emphasizing on strengthening resource-sharing and capacity building and its focus on accruing benefits for the developing countries. He apprised that multi-lateral space cooperation is at the core of APSCO cooperative activities.
APSCO delegation also made a statement at the regular 61st Session of COPUOS on June 22, 2018. APSCO delegation apprised the members of COPUOS on the progress of its cooperative activities and the up-coming events. A warm invitation was extended to all members of the Committee to join the APSCO’s 10th Anniversary High-Level Forum and 9th International Symposium” being organized during 14-16 November, 2018, in Beijing, China.
At the invitation of Dr. Li Xinjun, the Secretary-General of APSCO, a bi-lateral meeting was organized with Ms. Simonetta Di Pippo, the Director of UNOOSA, on 22 June 2018. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Niklas Hedman, and Mr. Ian Freeland, and had very fruitful outcomes. Both sides agreed-in-principle on co-organizing the 2019-UN Space Law & Policy Workshop, in Turkey. UNOOSA also offered APSCO to join in its program on capacity-building in connection with climate change, being launched with the support of the government of News Zealand and invited APSCO delegation to attend the related conference planned in May-June timeframe.
APSCO delegation also witnessed the ceremonies organized at the side-events by member States China and Pakistan related to their contribution for the UNISPACE+50 and handing over of models of Chinese Space Station and Pakistan’s satellites by Secretary-General of CNSA and Chairman SUPARCO, respectively. Dr. Li Xinjun, also met with honorable Ministers and Heads of Space Agencies of all the Member States of APSCO and had bi-lateral meeting on mutual interest.
During the week of 18-23 June, APSCO also organized an exhibition booth in VIC dedicated to UNISPACE+50. Delegates from space agencies and educational institutes showed their interest in the APSCO co-operative activities and established communications with the space community.
