The Secretariat of APSCO organized the International Training Course on “Space-based Technologies for Disaster Risk Assessment and International Charter Project Manager Training” jointly with the National Disaster Reduction Center of China (NDRCC), UN-SPIDER Beijing Office (affiliated to the United Nations) from 5-10 September, 2019 in Beijing, China. This training was organized back to back with the United Nations International Conference on Space-based Technologies for Disaster Risk Reduction - "A Policy Perspective" which was organized from 11 to 12 September, 2019.
The opening ceremony of the training was held in the morning of September 5, 2019 at the Regional Centre for Space Science Technology Education in Asia and the Pacific (RCSSTEAP) based in Beihang University and was addressed by Dr. Mohammad Ebrahimi Seyedabadi, Director General of Department of Education and Training of APSCO, Dr. Shirish Ravan, Head of UN-SPIDER Beijing Office, Dr. Wang Wei, Deputy Director of Aerial Remote Sensing Department of National Disaster Reduction Centre of China (NDRCC) and Prof. Weng Jingnong, Dean of International School, Beihang University/Executive Director of RCSSTEAP.
The first four days of training was conducted at International school of Beihang University focusing on space-based technology for disaster risk assessment with various topics. The experts from International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Geospatial Information Technologies (GIT) of Delta State University, National Disaster Reduction Centre of China (NDRCC), SuperMap Software Co., Airbus and French Space Agency（CNES）contributed to the training programme.
APSCO Secretariat supported the International Charter Project Manager Training on September 10, 2019 located at NDRCC headquarter. A total of 66 participants including 16 participants from APSCO Member States and project managers of space related organizations as well as participants of Conference participated in the training. The training was conducted by experts from the CNES and Center for Resources Satellite Data and Applications (CRESDA). The unique feature of this PM training is several disaster management officials of several developing countries attended the training and understood importance of the International Charter in their functions. Such training is expected to promote universal access in developing countries.
The training course was successfully concluded on September 10, 2019. Dr. Shirish Ravan chaired the closing ceremony of the training. Dr. Ebrahimi Seyedabadi Mohammad, Mr. Luc ST-PIERRE, the senior programme officer of UNOOSA; Ms. Qi Yu, Deputy Director General of Systematic Engineering Department of CNSA; and Mr. Zhenkuan Wei, Director General of NDRCC, MEM, P.R. China, Ms. Claire Tinel from CNES, the Executive Secretariat of Charter and Prof. Weng Jingnong provided closing ceremony addresses. They delivered the training certificates to participants at the end of the ceremony. Participants of the training session expressed their satisfaction over the content of the training course and spoke highly on the lecturers. Advises and suggestions were given for improvement of the contents, course objectives and teaching quality.
