The First Expert Group Meeting on the Feasibility Study Report of “Establishment of a Framework for Researches on Application of Space Technology for Disaster Monitoring in the APSCO Member States Project-Phase II” was held through teleconference from 1-2 June, 2020. Experts from all Member States namely, Bangladesh, China, Iran, Mongolia, Pakistan, Peru, Thailand and Turkey participated in the meeting.
Dr. Manop Aorpimai, Director General of the Department of Strategic Planning and Program Management of APSCO, welcomed all participants from Member States. He evaluated fruitful outcome achieved in the first phase of the project and emphasized it as one of successful projects that show the spirit of cooperation to work together and share resources among all Member States. He also thanked all Joint Research Projects leads in the first phase of the project and the project leader, Space Research and Remote Sensing Organization (SPARRSO) for their hard work and contributions to the feasibility study report of the project. He encouraged all experts from Member States to jointly cooperate and share experience to improve the second phase of the project.
Dr. Manop Aorpimai was selected by all participants to chair the meeting. Ms. Susan, the Project Manager from the Department of Strategic Planning and Program Management of APSCO, gave a presentation on the background and introduction of the project and the main objectives of this meeting. Dr. A.Z. Md. Zahedul Islam, from SPARRSO, presented the Feasibility Study Report to all participants.
Discussion on the draft Feasibility Study Report was carried out based on the recommendations and comments proposed by experts from Member States. The List of disasters considered for the 2nd Phase of the project was collected based on the priority inputs from all Member States, which will be further discussed in the Technical Sessions of the project.
As a conclusion of the meeting, the Project Initiator shall update the Feasibility Study Report according to the recommendations and comments of the participants during the meeting, and shall submit it to APSCO Secretariat in due time. All Member States agreed to propose the Feasibility Study Report of “Establishment of a Framework for Researches on Application of Space Technology for Disaster Monitoring in the APSCO Member States Project-Phase II” to the upcoming Council Meeting in 2020 for approval as a Basic Activity under APSCO platform.
