Ms. Aisha Jagirani, Director General of the Department of External Relations and Legal Affairs, discussed the regulatory and policy dimensions of Space Situational Awareness (SSA) during UNOOSA-UNODA Webinar on “Responsible Behavior in Outer Space, Session 4: Prospects for international cooperation in space situational awareness” held on 19 May 2020. Ms. Jagirani participated in the event as one of the panelists. She presented her views on the importance of international cooperation in SSA and also discussed the role and initiatives of APSCO in promoting space sustainability and developing capabilities of its Member States in the area.
The event was organized by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA). The webinar was conducted on 17, 19 and 21 May, 2021 virtually and had five sessions, which discussed topics such as trends and developments on the nature of threats to space systems, perspectives from new and expanding national space operators, threat perceptions by private operators relating to any extension of armed conflict into outer space, and prospects for international cooperation in space situational awareness.
The event was attended by more than 200 participants, and 11 panelist that included experts from government, industry and international organizations.
The event was organized as part of the UNOOSA’s Promoting Space Sustainability Project to raise global awareness of the importance of space sustainability and foster related capacity-building services for emerging spacefaring nations.
