The First Technical Session (TS) of “Establishment of a Framework for Researches on Application of Space Technology for Disaster Monitoring in the APSCO Member States-Phase II” Project coping with the first two disaster research themes, i.e., Theme#1: ‘Flood’ and Theme#2: ‘Landslide/Avalanche’ was organized during 10-11 August 2021. Delegates of the research teams nominated from Bangladesh, China, Iran, Mongolia, Pakistan, Peru, Thailand and Turkey, as well as Project Management Team from APSCO Secretariat attended the virtual meeting.
On behalf of APSCO Secretariat, Dr. Manop Aorpimai, Director-General of Strategic Planning and Program Management Department of APSCO, delivered welcome speech to all participants. He highlighted the importance and need of disaster monitoring using space technology. He also informed to that the Secretariat is working on establishment of APSCO Charter for disaster monitoring and mitigation among APSCO Members.
Mr. A.Z. Md. Zahedul Islam, on behalf of the Project Lead, SPARRSO, Bangladesh, addressed to all delegates. He emphasized that the project’s main aim is to share knowledge and experiences on disaster monitoring and mitigation among APSCO Members, through activities during the technical sessions and joint research projects (JRP).
During the Technical Session, experts from Member States presented their practices and experiences on application of space technology for monitoring of flood and landslide/avalanche in their respective countries. The potential joint research projects on theme#1: “Flood” and theme#2: “Landslide/Avalanche” were proposed by Member States and discussions were actively exchanged among the researchers.
The 1st TS was concluded with very fruitful outcomes. There were seven JRPs proposed for Theme#1: “Flood”, and five JRPs proposed for Theme#2: “Landslide/Avalanche”. The Project Lead for each JRP, as well as the participating research teams from APSCO Member States were also finalized during the meeting.
