The “Forest Carbon Stock Assessment Using Geospatial Technologies” Project Successfully Concluded

The Final Acceptance Review (FAR) Meeting and Final Workshop of “Forest Carbon Stock Assessment using Geospatial Technologies” Project was successfully organized via a teleconference during 1-4 November, 2021. Experts as well as review team members from Bangladesh, China, Mongolia, Pakistan, Peru, Thailand, Turkey and the Review Board from APSCO Secretariat participated in this meeting. 

In the Opening Session, Dr. Manop Aorpimai, Director-General of Strategic Planning and Program Management Department of APSCO and Chairman of this meeting welcomed all delegates on behalf of APSCO Secretariat. He expressed his sincere thanks and gratitude to all Member States, especially the Project Lead, SUPARCO of Pakistan, for their great efforts and contributions to the project. He emphasized that APSCO Secretariat will continue supporting this kind of application project that employs geospatial technology for sustainable development for our Member States.

Ms. Saadia Naeem, Deputy Chief Manager, addressed a welcome speech on behalf of Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO). She highlighted the superior advantage of remote sensing technology for forest carbon stock assessment. She sincerely appreciated APSCO Secretariat for supporting the project implementation, especially on dataset acquisition and capacity building processes. She expressed her sincere thanks to all Member States for their expertise and knowledge sharing throughout the implementation course of the project.

Dr. Atif Shahzad, the Project Manager from SUPARCO, presented the project progress report and the project deliverable documents on “Algorithms for the Assessment of Above Ground Carbon Stock”, “Thematic Maps with Accuracy Assessment Table”, “Project Report” and “Research Paper”. The project deliverables documents were thoroughly reviewed and discussed among Member States. The final workshop was organized back-to-back with the FAR meeting on topics of remote sensing data processing, development of algorithm and mapping of forest carbons stock assessment , from 2 to 4 November 2021. All participating experts from Member States actively exchanged their knowledge and experiences at the workshop.

By witnessing the successful conclusion of the project, Madam. Yu Qi, Secretary-General of APSCO, addressed conclusion remarks to congratulate the impressive achievements of this project. She expressed her sincere thanks to all Member States for their continuous support, especially, SUPARCO and their project team for their excellent contributions throughout the whole process of the project. She expected to extending cooperation on utilizing geospatial technology to improve quality of life and facilitate socio-economics development of APSCO Member States.

It was recognized by the review board and review team members from Member States that the FAR deliverables have been accepted and the objectives of the meeting have been well achieved. The Forest Carbon Stock Assessment using Geospatial Technologies Project was considered to be completed with great success.
